Abstract and Highlights of Higher Education SPROUT Project Section I in Yu Da University of Science and TechnologyYu Da University of Science and Technology (YDUST) executed Higher Education SPROUT Project with “industry” as the main core, “teachers” and “students” as the supports to fulfill “sustainable development and social responsibility” and finally bridge the gap and strengthen knowledge-action integration to boost the students’ competitiveness of employability. By means of monthly oversight and evaluation meeting, the SPROUT Project in Yu Da University of Science and Technology was effectively progressed. Launched with the “student-centered” idea, the university demonstrated its strengths in multi-faceted development, and corresponded the needs of industries to achieve the goal “Graduation guarantees employment, and hand-on expertise shows at the very beginning of the work.”
In the facet of nurturing talents for the new era, students were encouraged to develop their second or third skills by participating the nine carefully crafted cross-discipline programs and broaden their horizons at the same time. There were 755 students joining these cross-discipline programs in the fall semester of 2020 (52.8% growth).
In the facet of developing university features, we were closely tied to the development of local industries and organizations, and cooperated in curriculum design, talent cultivation, and field practice. Oriented with service and problem-solving business model, we introduced drone (AKA unmanned flying vehicle) for innovative services, AI robotics for senior and child care, high value added circular economy models, to trigger the opportunities for innovation, creation, and employment. In addition to the implementation of the Ministry of Labor’s plan, YDUST guided 13 local trainees to obtain a number of advanced professional operation certificates, and further applied for establishing a drone professional examination place. So far it’s observed and examined by the Civil Aviation Administration. It is expected to be approved in the near future. YDUST will make good use of this advantage to cultivate drone operators and introduce innovative service application development in the drone technology industry.
Meanwhile, YDUST was eager to fulfill international academic exchanges and meaningful participation, thus help students developed their international mobility as well as enhance YDUST international reputation. In addition to promoting dual degree programs with foreign sister schools, YDUST also contracted with distinguish firms in Singapore, Japan, Australia, the US, etc. for student internships. There were 34 students doing their internships overseas in the year of 2017, and 39 ones doing their internships in the year of 2018. There were more than 100 students studying or doing internships abroad every year.
For the efforts of making resources more public, YDUST focused on the productivity and effectiveness of the university development through the establishment of Institutional Research (IR) office to self-monitor performance and accountability in administration, management, facilities, instructions, research, and student learning. By means of visualized management system, instructions and counseling were highly improved, consequently attracted students to enroll in the university. The registration rate of YDUST has risen against the trend for two consecutive years, 78.49% in the year of 2018, ranking 24th in the national private university of science and technology, with an improvement rate of 23, ranking first in the country. In the year of 2019 continued to growing, reaching 80.25%. In the year of 2020, the school still maintained 75.28% in the circumstance of a general decline in all universities and colleges across the country, and the ranking improved to 23rd. In the year of 2018, the school stability rate of the bachelor's class in the daytime department reached 81.24%, ranking 39th in private technology universities and colleges in the country, and it improved to 86.51% in the year of 2019, ranking 27th.
In order to fulfill University Social Responsibility (USR), the faculty, staff, and students of YDUST collaborated to inventory local issues and needs for development, and then focused on “service for senior citizens”, “food and agriculture education”, and “ethnic acculturation” to integrate the regional groups of all ages and facilitate the development of local caring industrial and cultural innovation; in addition, provided the students options for meaningful learning.
Recently, the productivity and effectiveness of YDUST development have been highly recognized by the public. Actually, YDUST has been awarded rank 6th and rank 5th respectively among “the most competitive colleges” in Chinatimes and 1111 Job Bank since 2018. This recognition showed that fact that even with limited resources, YDUST has been sticking to its educational mission, implementing its development goals, fulfilling its social responsibilities, identifying regional advantageous areas through industry-academia collaboration, and finally recognized by the public in Taiwan.
